The Profession of Arms
In the autumn of 1526, Emperor Charles V dispatches his German landsknechts, led by Georg von Frundsberg, to march towards Rome. The inferior papal armies, led by Giovanni de'Medici, attempt to pursue them in the midst of a harsh winter. Despite this, the Imperial armies are able to cross rivers and acquire cannons thanks to the maneuvering of its Lords. Giovanni de'Medici is shot in the leg by a falconet during a skirmish. Attempts to cure him fail, and he dies. The Imperial armies attack Rome. The film is beautifully but unassumingly set, and it depicts the harsh conditions under which war is waged, as well as its lack of glory. It concludes simply with the declaration made by the commanders of European armies after the death of Giovanni de'Medici not to use fire weapons again due to their cruelty.
