Our Gang

Our Gang can be a series of American comedy films about a set of very poor neighborhood kids and their experiences. Created by comedy producer Hal Roach, the show is known for showing kids acting in a relatively ordinary method, as Roach and unique director Robert F. McGowan functioned to picture the untouched, raw nuances evident from regular kids as opposed to ask them to mimic adult acting styles. In addition, '' Our Gang notably placed boys, girls, whites and blacks together as equals, something which"broke new earth," according to film historian Leonard Maltin. That hadn't been achieved before in cinema, however, has been repeated after the accomplishment of Our Gang. The first production at the Roach studio in 1922 was a run of short subjects. When distributors changed into Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1927 from Pathé, also converted the string into noise in 1929, the show took off. Production continued at the Roach studio when the string was sold to MGM, continuing to produce the comedies. Our Gang series comprises 220 shorts and one feature film, General Spanky, including over forty one child actors. As MGM kept the rights to our Gang trademark after their order of their production rights,'' the 80 Roach-produced"talkies" were syndicated for television under the name The Little Rascals beginning in 1955. Both Roach's The Little Rascals package and MGM's Our Gang package have stayed in syndication, using periodic productions depending on the shorts including a 1994 Small Rascals feature picture.
